Russia has significant hydropower potential, which allows the construction of hydroelectric power plants with a total capacity of up to 250 gigawatts. This was announced by the Minister of Energy of the Russian Federation, Sergei Tsivilev, during the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF).
Our country has enormous hydropower potential — we can build hydroelectric power plants for about 250 gigawatts. To date, only slightly more than 50 gigawatts have been implemented.
The Minister emphasized that Russia plans to use this potential in stages.
According to him, the Primorsky and Khabarovsk Territories face not only other challenges, but also problems related to floods that periodically occur in these regions. The hydroelectric power plants planned to be built in these territories will serve not only for electricity generation, but also for the implementation of flood prevention measures.
During snowmelt or heavy rains leading to floods, hydroelectric power plants will accumulate water, collecting it in reservoirs. In the summer, when the reservoirs and rivers of Siberia and the Far East lose water volume, these reservoirs will gradually release it, thereby ensuring a more stable water balance, Tsivilev noted.
