The exercises took place at the Baltic Fleet's naval training ranges

The crews of the small anti-submarine ships (MPK) "Aleksin" and "Kabardino-Balkariya" attacked a mock enemy submarine with torpedoes. The maneuvers took place in the naval training ranges of the Baltic Fleet near the coast of the Kaliningrad Region, the fleet's press service reported.

The underwater target was engaged with practical ammunition – conventional torpedoes without a warhead, which were then located and recovered from the water by the crew of a torpedo recovery boat after the combat exercise.

During the exercises, the sailors practiced searching for and detecting an underwater target. The "Dmitrov" submarine of the Baltic Fleet acted as the enemy submarine.

The exercises also included practicing:

  • damage control
  • jamming
  • anti-sabotage defense
  • grenade throwing

About the small anti-submarine ship "Aleksin"

MPK-224 "Aleksin" is a small anti-submarine ship of Project 1331M. The ship was laid down at the Peene-Werft shipyard in Wolgast (GDR) in February 1987. It was launched in March 1988. "Aleksin" joined the Baltic Fleet in April 1989.

About the small anti-submarine ship "Kabardino-Balkariya"

The MPK was laid down at the Peene-Werft shipyard in Wolgast (GDR) in September 1987. It was launched in August 1988. "Kabardino-Balkariya" joined the Baltic Fleet in October 1989.

Both MPKs are designed to search for, track, and destroy enemy submarines. The ships are armed with AK-176 and AK-630 anti-aircraft artillery systems, RBU-6000 rocket launchers, and 533-mm torpedo tubes.
