Russian IT entrepreneur Pavel Durov was arrested at Le Bourget Airport in Paris, where he arrived from Azerbaijan. He may face up to 20 years in prison under many articles of French law.
Possible charges include money laundering, terrorism, prohibited sexual content, drugs, and fraud. Since Durov has French citizenship (presumably obtained in 2021), he will be tried as a French citizen.
Investigative authorities told TF1 that the Telegram messenger has become the main platform for organized crime. Durov continues to refuse to cooperate with French law enforcement on security issues. And this makes the entrepreneur an "accomplice" to crimes.
The father of "VKontakte" has been taken into custody, and he will be sent to court in the near future.
Due to Durov's arrest, the value of his TON cryptocurrency collapsed by 15%. According to Binance, by 00:08 (Moscow time) on August 25, the cryptocurrency fell by 15.61%, to $5.78. By 00:25, TON slowed its fall to 12.2%. The search for the hashtag "Telegram" stopped working on social network X (formerly Twitter).
