The Russian Su-34 fighter-bomber, after undergoing modernization, has received the functions of a reconnaissance aircraft. The aircraft, with the help of suspended equipment, has acquired the capabilities of electronic intelligence, according to the V.P. Chkalov Novosibirsk Aviation Plant.
As a result of the modernization, the aircraft will receive new functionality. By installing radar reconnaissance containers and modifying the aircraft, the aircraft receives a new one - a reconnaissance aircraft. It performs radar and electronic intelligence using suspended equipment.
In addition, the Su-34 received a new communication complex that allows receiving operational information from the ground. The reconnaissance aircraft transmits target designation coordinates on the ground when the vehicle is already in the air. After that, the flight mission is adjusted.
Both new, serially produced aircraft and those already operated by the military have been modernized.
Military expert Evgeny Damantsev explained that we are talking about the integration of UKR-RL "Sych" container radar reconnaissance complexes based on Pika-M phased array radars of side view on combat aircraft.
They are capable of detecting concentrations of enemy equipment at a distance of up to 150 km in synthetic aperture mode for their final destruction by 9M544/549 MLRS "Tornado-S" rockets and 9M723-1 missiles of the "Iskander-M" complexes.
According to him, conventional UAVs of infrared reconnaissance are capable of detecting no more than 15 - 25% of enemy equipment well disguised in forests. The updated Su-34M should solve this issue as soon as possible.
