What the new Russian "Horse" cubesat, which Bauman University brought to "Army-2024", can do

The small spacecraft not only helps scientists and meteorologists, but can also track ships on the Northern Sea Route

Bauman Moscow State Technical University is presenting its small spacecraft "Horse" No. 4 at the "Army-2024" forum. There is already a whole family of "Horses", named after the East Slavic god of the daytime sun and systemic order. Satellites of groups No. 1 and No. 2 were launched into orbit last summer under the "UniverSat" program of the Roscosmos State Corporation.

"Horse" No. 1 and "Horse" No. 2 are actively conducting operational monitoring of the helio-geophysical situation in low Earth orbit. Control and data reception from satellites is carried out from the Mission Control Center of Bauman Moscow State Technical University.

Cubesats "Horse" No. 3 and "Horse" No. 4 received equipment for radio-occultation sounding of the atmosphere and ionosphere of the Earth. It can receive signals from Russian and foreign global navigation satellite systems: GLONASS, GPS, Beidou, Galileo.

Due to refraction in the Earth's atmosphere, the actual trajectory of the navigation signal deviates from the straight line connecting two points - the navigation satellite and the receiver. From this deviation, you can extract information about the state of the atmosphere and ionosphere of the Earth: vertical profiles of temperature, humidity, pressure and other qualitatively new useful data that scientists can further use to predict the weather.
In addition, the cubesats are equipped with an automatic identification system (AIS), which receives signals from river and sea vessels. These messages contain information about the location, speed and course of the vessel. The space monitoring system complements ground stations with data on non-radar space, for example, the Arctic, during navigation on the Northern Sea Route.

All the equipment of the cubesats and hardware and software for data processing were created in the Design Bureau "Breakthrough Space Research and Technology", also known as the Design Bureau "ProKIT" with the participation of university students. Beginning satellite builders test their developments in practice: Bauman Moscow State Technical University has established ties with data-consuming organizations in Roshydromet and the Ministry of Transport. Since 2020, ProKIT has developed and launched six nanosatellites to study space weather, and they are still monitoring them.

The International Military-Technical Forum "Army-2024" is being held at the Patriot Exhibition Center from August 12 to 14. This year, the "Army" forum is being held in a closed format for the first time: canceled all entertainment events and free access to exhibitions for viewers.
