SAO "Lotus" was developed at the Central Research Institute of Precision Engineering (TsNIITochmash, part of Kalashnikov). The self-propelled gun will replace the Nona, which has been in service since 1981.

In addition, the Lotus is 1.5 times superior to the Nona-SM SAO in terms of the carried ammunition and the firing range of standard high-explosive fragmentation shells. The SAO is created on a chassis unified in terms of units and assemblies with the BMD-4M, equipped with a combat compartment with a 120-mm gun with a high degree of automation of preparation and firing operations.

Tactical and technical characteristics of SAO "Lotus":

  • Weight — no more than 18 tons
  • Maximum speed — 70 km/h
  • Engine power — 450 hp
  • Power reserve — at least 500 km
  • Firing range — up to 13 km
  • SAO calculation — from four people
