The domestic operating system Astra Linux has received a major update to version 1.8, according to representatives of PJSC Astra Group. The new OS release is an eighth-generation system with a number of significant improvements.
Key changes in Astra Linux 1.8:
Updated Interface
- The new Astra Proxima interface graphic style retains the classic layout of elements — taskbar at the bottom, start menu in the lower left corner, clock and system icons on the right, and a menu with notifications.
- The interface has become lighter and airier, resembling Windows 11, with an improved settings menu that combines elements from the "Control Panel" and "Parameters" of modern versions of Windows.
- Support for light and dark interface themes.
Dual Kernel Support
- Linux 6.1: a kernel with long-term support, modified taking into account the research of the Technological Center of ISP RAS, will be updated throughout the entire life cycle of the OS.
- Linux 6.6: a kernel with short-term support, providing improved support for virtualization, containerization, and modern hardware.
Repositories
- The basis of Astra Linux 1.8 is the package base of the stable branch of the Debian 12 Linux distribution with the code name Bookworm.
- Change in the structure of repositories. Now there are two — Main and Extended.
- The Astra Linux Directory repository has been excluded.
Security Improvements
- SSI configuration profiles. Recommended information security configuration profiles are included for various usage scenarios.
- CryptoPro CSP. The ability to use a certified information cryptographic protection tool.
Update and Availability
- The new installer simplifies the deployment process, providing all the necessary parameters in one window and supporting Live CD mode for preliminary evaluation of the OS.
- Special Edition version: the update is only available for the version certified by the FSTEC and focused on the public sector.
- Common Edition version: expected in the future for private companies and home PCs.
- The update process is automated and saves the user's home folder, with the ability to roll back to the previous version in case of an error.
