The head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Anton Alikhanov, stated that Russia has already mastered the production of steering columns for cars. The official emphasized that this is a rather complex mechanism.
We already produce steering wheels in Russia. The steering column is a rather complex technical unit; it's not like casting a plastic mold for the interior or bumper on some molds. It's a complex unit. We have already localized it.
On the sidelines of the Innoprom exhibition in Yekaterinburg, the official stated that the steering wheel of the Aurus car is now Russian.
As a reminder, in May, Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin visited the Digital Industry of Industrial Russia exhibition in Nizhny Novgorod and got acquainted with the new VOLGA cars (Chinese Changan). The politician criticized the car for insufficient localization. He noted that the steering wheel was made in China.
Where is your steering wheel made? Chinese? I would like the steering wheel to be Russian. It's not as difficult as localizing the gearbox and all the other elements.
Perhaps Alikhanov's statement on the localization of the production of steering wheels and steering columns was a kind of response to the Prime Minister's criticism.
