For the first time, nuclear scientists have loaded fuel assemblies with uranium-plutonium MOX fuel containing minor actinides (the most radiotoxic and long-lived components of spent nuclear fuel) into the BN-800 fast neutron reactor at power unit No. 4 of the Beloyarsk NPP in the Sverdlovsk Region. This was reported by the press service of the state corporation (GC) "Rosatom".
Three experimental MOX-FAs containing americium-241 and neptunium-237 were manufactured at the Mining and Chemical Combine of Rosatom State Corporation. The head of the Beloyarsk NPP, Ivan Sidorov, stated that nuclear scientists must experimentally confirm the possibility of utilizing minor actinides on an industrial scale.
The elimination of minor actinides is an advantage of fast neutron reactors, which makes it possible to reduce the volume of radioactive waste from the entire nuclear fuel cycle infrastructure of NPP operation.
Minor actinides release a lot of heat and have a long half-life. All this time, it is necessary to ensure their isolation from the biosphere. Nuclear scientists have proposed separating actinides during the reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel and including them in the composition of nuclear fuel for fast neutron reactors for subsequent afterburning.
