Engineers at the "Ural Design Bureau of Transport Machine Building" (Nizhny Tagil) have developed a new prefabricated serrated boom for the anti-cumulative screen for Russian armored vehicles. It is installed on T-72B3M tanks of the 2022 model. Military expert Evgeny Damantsev explained the principle of operation of such a boom.
Damantsev drew attention to the fact that anti-cumulative screens with classic booms of hexagonal cross-section had previously been installed on armored vehicles. For example, this can be seen in the photograph of the anti-cumulative screen of the T-90M tank turret race.
However, the development of Ural engineers, who proposed using a prefabricated serrated boom, significantly increased the anti-cumulative effect when a cumulative ammunition hits the vehicle (shells, bombs, grenades designed to destroy armored targets), he noted.
The anti-cumulative screen, as an element of passive protection of armored vehicles, is designed to prevent or reduce the destructive effect of a cumulative jet of ammunition. When a projectile detonates, the anti-cumulative screen will win "life-saving centimeters" from the cumulative jet for the main armor of the tank.
New serrated booms of complex geometric arrangement with wedge-shaped "teeth" oriented towards the cumulative warhead (warhead) of the ammunition will provide more effective destruction of the metal lining of the cumulative warhead, disrupting the formation of the working body of the cumulative jet.
Thus, at the moment of contact with the tank's armor, the cumulative jet will not only be partially defocused, but also unevenly formed, which will further reduce its penetration coefficient, Damantsev summarized.
