What Region Is It? Car Number Plate Codes That Few People Know About

Cars with the 550 region have appeared on the roads, the 49 region is the least common

Car enthusiasts are always attracted by unusual region codes on passing cars. Recently, cars with the 550th region on their license plates have been spotted on the roads of Moscow and the Moscow region. This is an additional code for the Moscow region. People on the roads are not yet used to it. But there are other regions on car number plates that surprise drivers.

What is the principle behind the distribution of region numbers?

The region codes for car number plates are assigned as follows: first come all the republics in alphabetical order, then the territories, then the regions, followed by the federal cities — Moscow, St. Petersburg and Sevastopol, followed by the Jewish Autonomous Region and four autonomous districts — Nenets, Khanty-Mansiysk, Chukotka and Yamalo-Nenets.

This well-ordered scheme failed three times. The first time was when Gorny Altai, which received the code 04, began to be referred to in official documents simply as Altai. This was the first failure in the ordered alphabetical order.

The second time was due to the events in Chechnya. This republic had the 20th region code from 1993 to 2000. But then they decided to abandon this region number. For those who don't remember, Chechnya is now the 95th region.

The fact is that during the Chechen war, many cars in the republic were registered using fake documents, because the vehicles were not obtained entirely legally. The authorities decided to deal with this, and since 2000, all new cars have received the 95th region that we are familiar with, and owners of cars with the 20th region were sent to re-register their vehicles.

The third time the scheme failed was when there were too many cars on the roads. For example, the capital's car fleet has grown to such an extent that Moscow now has 10 car region codes. And the Moscow region has slightly less — eight.

Rare car region

The rarest car region on the road is the 94th. The author of this text has never seen cars with it on the roads, but they do exist. The fact is that the 94th region is not issued in Russia, but in Kazakhstan. This is the car code of Baikonur. Our country has leased it until 2050.

Also, you can still rarely find car codes of new Russian regions on the roads: Donetsk (80) and Lugansk (81) People's Republics, Kherson (84, 184), Zaporozhye (85, 185), and Kharkov (188) regions.
