The former Volkswagen plant in Kaluga will be relaunched as early as June 2024. This was announced by the Governor of the Kaluga Region, Vladislav Shapsha, in his Telegram channel.
After negotiations with the management of AGR Automobile Group, I confirm the previously announced promise to resume the operation of the car plant. As expected, the relaunch will take place as early as June. With a subsequent increase in production volumes. More details about the model range and other important details will be available later.
As a reminder, Volkswagen suspended production in Kaluga and contract assembly in Nizhny Novgorod on March 3, 2022. The Kaluga plant produced Volkswagen Tiguan, Volkswagen Polo, and Skoda Rapid models.
In September 2023, Vladislav Shapsha announced that all car plants in the region would be launched and continue to operate according to their profile. The timing of the launch of production at the plant's facilities was constantly shifting to the right. This could have continued, but, fortunately for the Kaluga Region and the employees of the idle plant, at the VIII Russian-Chinese EXPO in Harbin at the end of May, Russian President Vladimir Putin decided to take matters into his own hands. He suggested that Chinese auto partners take a closer look at the Kaluga Region, and, apparently, they quickly did.
According to preliminary information, GAC cars may begin to be assembled at the plant.
It is worth noting that the relaunch of the Volkswagen plant in Kaluga is part of the region's strategic plan to restore industrial potential and develop the automotive industry.
