Attackers are spreading malware under the guise of neural networks

Kaspersky Lab has discovered a new threat to Russians. Attackers are disguising malicious programs for Windows OS as neural network-based applications for changing voices. You can catch Gipy either by downloading the application from a phishing site or from hacked third-party sites running WordPress. Russia is among the top 5 countries in the world in terms of users attacked by this trojan.

Once the malicious application gets onto a device, it starts downloading a number of archives with programs that will run secretly from the owner. These are stealer programs that steal user data and passwords, crypto-mining programs that will use the device, and programs for remote access to the victim's computer, laptop, or smartphone.

Cybersecurity experts advise Russians on how to avoid becoming a victim of this trojan and others like it:

  • download programs only from official resources;
  • use strong, unique passwords for all accounts;
  • enable two-factor authentication in all services where possible;
  • never follow suspicious links, including links from emails from unknown senders;
  • use a reliable security solution on all devices, purchased from official manufacturers.

Previously, fraudsters in Russia learned to change voices for extortion and fake voice messages from users after hacking their social media accounts. That is, if you are hacked, with the help of AI, requests to transfer money will sound like your voice — and they are more likely to be believed.
