The rescue and salvage vessel "Mikhail Chekov" (the seventh vessel of Project 22870) was launched at the shipyard of the "Astrakhan Shipyard" (part of the Zvezdochka Ship Repair Center). The vessel was built by order of the Russian Ministry of Defense, the USC press service reported.
Project 22870 was developed by engineers from the Vympel Design Bureau. The vessel "Mikhail Chekov" is designed to assist emergency ships, rescue sailors, tow vessels, and extinguish fires on ships and coastal infrastructure.
The vessel has the ability to keep emergency ships afloat and perform complex diving operations at depths of up to 60 meters.
The vessel can collect oil products from the water surface, as well as conduct search operations. It is named after the Black Sea Fleet officer Mikhail Chekov, who led rescue teams during the Great Patriotic War. Together with the sailors, they raised ships and vessels sunk by the enemy.
