The first device of the federal project "Sphere" from Reshetnev, the demonstrator satellite "Skif-D", has begun its active operation. It is located in a new orbit for Russia – 8,070 km with polar inclination, and provides high-quality live video communication.
As noted by the satellite builders, "Skif-D" distinguished itself, in particular, during the preparation of a report for Cosmonautics Day. The film crew of the TV channel "Russia 24" and the Deputy General Designer of the Zheleznogorsk enterprise, Mikhail Valov, connected via a spacecraft using ground stations.
Control ground stations of the experimental command and measurement complex at JSC "RESHETNEV" and at the Scientific and Production Center "Small Spacecraft" on the territory of the Zheleznogorsk Industrial Park, two cellular base stations, as well as a secure Internet network provided by the provider, were used for communication between subscribers in video call mode.
The demonstrator satellite "Skif-D" is the first of the Roscosmos project satellites "Sphere", which, through a multitude of satellites, will make access to the Network possible even in the deep tundra and help develop technologies.
"Skif-D" has been in space since the fall of 2022. During this time, it has worked out the technologies for controlling the spacecraft and accessing the Internet at a speed of 6.5 megabits per second. The satellite also solved the problem of protecting the orbital frequency resource of the Skif satellite communication system. In October 2024, the satellite developers must submit repeated radio frequency applications to the International Telecommunication Union, and then calmly launch new satellites of the "Skif" group. There will be twelve "Skifs" in total.
