The Russian Ministry of Defense spoke about the work of its unusual unit. This is part of the railway troops — the special train "Volga", which serves as protection and support for military echelons and passenger trains, and its soldiers.
"Volga" was created and staffed by the railway troops of the Western Military District in the summer of 2022. This special train is covered with armor, its platforms are equipped with weapons, equipment and fire equipment, shelters for firing and repelling enemy attacks from the ground and air. Including in the form of drones.
Inside the armored train there are several platoons, each of which has its own task:
- the mine-blasting platoon is engaged in engineering reconnaissance, clearing the tracks of unexploded ordnance, and demining;
- the rifle platoon provides reliable fire cover;
- the restoration platoon is engaged in the restoration of destroyed sections of the railway track.
The "Volga" can have a variety of missions. It can work both to cover and support civilian trains, and in tandem with military echelons. In the front-line zone, in the most difficult sections of the railway, the "Volga" always goes ahead.
The train is designed to perform technical reconnaissance of assigned areas. Demining, restoration of the railway track and small artificial structures, with minor amounts of destruction, as well as combat support of transports, trains during operations and combat operations. The personnel is in autonomous mode and is ready to perform the assigned combat mission at any time of the day.
The "Volga" has a brother, the armored train "Yenisei", with similar tasks and characteristics. The routes and schedules of both of these special trains are always classified.
