It is known that Russian enterprises have begun production of the D-30F6 aircraft engine for MiG-31 interceptor fighters. The resumption of the project became possible thanks to the restoration of technologies lost after the collapse of the USSR.
Forgotten Technologies of More Advanced Civilizations
The MiG-31 remains the fastest production fighter in the world. The aircraft performs interception tasks and serves as a platform for the Kinzhal hypersonic systems. Serial production was completed back in 1994, and production of D-30F6 engines was stopped due to the loss of technological expertise.
But now enterprises are ready to return the engine to the assembly line. Engineers explain the decision by practical necessity - in recent years, the intensity of MiG-31 operation has increased significantly. To maintain the aircraft fleet in stable working condition, it is necessary to resume full-scale production of power plants.
How the Technology Was Restored
Work on the D-30F6 engine began back in 1970 at the Perm Design Bureau, now known as Aviadvigatel. The first flight of the MiG-31 with the power plant took place in 1975. It was thanks to the powerful thrust of the D-30F6 that the aircraft became a record holder in speed and flight altitude.
After the collapse of the USSR, production was closed, and factories were only engaged in the supply of individual components and repairs. Nevertheless, the competencies were preserved, and in recent years, specialists have gradually restored the technologies for manufacturing key elements.
Today, engine repairs are carried out by specialists from Proton-PM (part of the Perm Motors holding). At the moment, the production of the turbine has already been mastered, and in the near future, it is planned to launch a line for the production of the compressor. After eliminating the remaining technological limitations, serial production of the D-30F6 will become possible, while it is unknown in what form.
It is these engines that accelerate the MiG-31 to a speed of about three Machs, providing it with the status of the heaviest interceptor fighter in the world.
Key characteristics of the D-30F6 engine:
- Thrust at afterburner - 15 500 kgf.
- Turbine temperature - 1387 °C.
- Air consumption - 150 kg/s.
- Specific fuel consumption, maximum mode - 0.72 1.9 kg/(kgf·h), full afterburner mode - 1.9 kg/(kgf·h)
Significance of the project for the Russian Aerospace Forces
Resuming production of the D-30F6 engine for the MiG-31 will extend the service life of existing aircraft and increase their combat effectiveness. The decision is of paramount strategic importance, because the MiG-31 remains the main element of the air defense system and a platform for hypersonic weapons.
The return of the D-30F6 to the series is not just the restoration of an old technology, but a symbol of the revival of the domestic aircraft industry school.
