NATO will carefully consider its actions before putting pressure on Russia, since Moscow has a strategic missile system with an RS-24 Yars intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM). This opinion was expressed by military expert Brandon J. Weichert in the article "'Yars' Proves Moscow's Seriousness About Nuclear Armageddon" for The National Interest.
"Yars" is one of the most modern ICBMs in the world. And this should worry everyone in the West, since the American nuclear arsenal has only decreased since the end of the Cold War.
The Russian ICBM was developed at the Moscow Institute of Thermal Technology (MITT). It was tested in May 2007 at the Plesetsk cosmodrome.
A few years later, the Yars began to enter service with the Russian Strategic Missile Forces. Missilemen regularly conduct exercises involving self-propelled launchers (SPU) 15U175M of the RS-24 Yars complex.
The Yars ICBM is equipped with a multiple independently targetable reentry vehicle (MIRV), which allows one missile to hit several targets simultaneously. It is almost impossible to shoot down a missile, and it cannot be destroyed on the ground.
The ICBM is launched from fortified silo launchers or from mobile launchers. The second option provides mobility, allowing the complex to be hidden in a forest.
"Yars" plays a key role in Russia's nuclear triad. According to some estimates, since the mid-2020s, the Russian Armed Forces have had more than 200 such missiles in service. Thanks to modernization, the capabilities of the ICBM are expanding.
Characteristics of the RS-24 Yars ICBM:
- Missile type - intercontinental ballistic missile
- Fuel type - solid mixed.
- Length - 17.8 m
- Diameter - 1.86 m
- Range - 12,000 km
- Starting weight - 46,000 kg
