The "Vysokotochnye Rakety" holding company spoke about the closed Soviet project of the "Gnome" intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM).
The task of creating an ICBM with a range of 11 thousand kilometers was set before the Special Design Bureau (now known as AK "NPK "KBM"). Unlike other strategic missiles that used liquid fuel, the "Gnome" was to run on solid fuel.
One of the main difficulties was limiting the total weight of the launcher with the missile to 60 tons. For this, a solid-propellant ramjet engine was used as the first stage propulsion system. The solution was innovative.
The final weight of the missile with the launch container was 31.2 tons, and the length was 16.14 meters. The small size of the missile for this type of projectile was the reason for its name "Gnome".
The second innovation of the project was the mortar launch. The holding noted that today the "Gnome" remains the only project in the world for an intercontinental ballistic missile equipped with a solid-propellant ramjet engine.
Tactical and technical characteristics of the "Gnome" ICBM:
- Range of action — 11000 km.
- The speed of switching on the marching ramjet engine (ramjet) is 1.75-2 M.
- The speed of exit from the transport and launch container (TPK) is 45 m/s.
- Operating height of the 1st stage ramjet engine — 4000 - 38000 m.
- Operating time of a solid propellant rocket engine (RDT) — 17 s.
The "Gnome" ICBM is equipped with a monoblock nuclear warhead with a complex of means of overcoming missile defense.
