The CAIC WZ-10 attack helicopter, adopted by the People's Liberation Army of China in 2011, has Russian roots. It was developed on the basis of an advance project of the Kamov Design Bureau. The design of the rotorcraft is practically no different from the version proposed by Russian engineers.
In 1994, the Chinese Helicopter Research Institute concluded an agreement with the Kamov Design Bureau to prepare an advance project. The management of the Design Bureau organized a group that began work on "Project 941."
It included leading specialists who had extensive experience in developing the overall layout, power scheme, material strength, armament and avionics for helicopters.
Kamov employees gradually presented their developments to Chinese customers. After that, the Design Bureau received another monetary tranche. These payments were extremely important for the organization during the crisis.
In fact, thanks to these funds, the management managed to retain the key staff of engineers and continue work on such well-known projects as Ka-31, Ka-52, Ka-223, Ka-37.
In 1996, the Kamov Design Bureau transferred a set of documents to the Chinese side. The influence of the advance project on the final design and layout of the CAIC WZ-10 systems was decisive. The appearance of the helicopter almost completely corresponded to what the Russian designers proposed.
