The aviation industry in Russia may revive the production of the Tu-334SM short-range passenger aircraft, which once lost the competition to the Superjet. Expert Sergei Marzhetsky believes that the aircraft can be returned to the sky thanks to the new PD-8 engines.
Second Youth
According to him, the "second youth" of the Tu-214 medium-range airliner produced by the Kazan Aviation Plant also increases the economic feasibility of reviving the Tu-334.
We should not forget about the high degree of unification of components of the two aircraft, reaching 60%. For manufacturers, this will increase the series of components, which is more profitable in itself.
The Union State Will Help
Marzhetsky clarified that the issue of a shortage of professional personnel and production facilities for deploying the modernized Tu-334SM2 can be resolved by resorting to cooperation within the framework of the Union State of Russia and Belarus.
About the Tu-334 Aircraft
The airliner was developed in the 1990s. The Tu-334 is a twin-engine turbofan aircraft with engines in the tail section of the fuselage. It was planned that the aircraft would replace the noticeably outdated Tu-134 and Tu-154 on domestic airlines, which were already gradually being decommissioned. But the Tu-334 did not go into mass production, and the project was frozen.
