How to Determine a Tampered Car Mileage? Four Sure Signs

It is important to check the digital footprint of the car - reports on various sites

Unscrupulous sellers tamper with the mileage of used cars according to certain schemes. Nikita Rodionov, technical director of the Fit Service auto repair shop chain, explained how to identify such a car.

Mileage is tampered with in cars that have accumulated hundreds of thousands of kilometers. Such cars show significant wear on the seats, steering wheel, and pedals. For example, factory pedal covers wear out by 100,000 kilometers of mileage. New interior elements are a reason for questions, because they most likely replaced a worn-out part.

One of the obvious signs of high mileage is the presence of numerous scratches on the sills, hood edges, and doors. You should also pay attention to the dashboard. In some cases, mechanics may roughly open the case, and then traces of tools remain on it.

A mechanic in a car service can notice the difference between the actual wear of parts and the odometer readings. For example, a decrease in compression in the engine cylinders may indicate significant wear of the piston group, as the specialist noted.

Rodionov urged to check the digital footprint of the car - reports on various sites. If a car with a mileage of 200 thousand kilometers visited a service station for repairs, and a year later it is sold with a mileage of 150 thousand kilometers, the discrepancy will be noticeable in the report.

Car mileage is the distance it has traveled since its release or the last odometer reset. It is measured in kilometers or miles and is a key indicator of wear, technical condition, and market value of the car.

Mileage is measured by an odometer, which is usually located on the dashboard next to the speedometer. Some sellers reduce the mileage of a car to make it more attractive to buyers. Such actions are considered fraud.
