Unique Pantsir-SMD-E SAM System with 48 Missiles Will Not Concede to Expensive Western NASAMS-2 and IRIS-T SLM in the Most Important Characteristic

The new complex's firing performance reaches 16 targets per minute

The newest Pantsir-SMD-E surface-to-air missile system (SAM) is not inferior to more expensive multi-element analogues NASAMS-2 and IRIS-T SLM in terms of firing performance, according to military expert Evgeny Damantsev.

According to him, the SAM system is equipped with a promising radar system (RLS) capable of detecting unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) with an ultra-small effective reflecting surface (ERS) at a distance of 5-7 km, and 122-mm rockets at a distance of 10 km.

The new detection radar has a much higher potential in detecting not only kamikaze UAVs such as the An-196 Lyuty, but also FPV drones and heavy Baba Yaga-class drones.

The ammunition load of the new module is represented by 48 small-sized anti-aircraft guided missiles (SAMs) 19Ya6 for intercepting drones and rockets at an altitude of up to 5500 m, or six SAMs 57E6/M with a range of 20 km.

The firing performance of the Pantsir-SMD-E SAM system reaches 14-16 intercepted targets per minute.

Only expensive multi-element SAM systems such as NASAMS-2 and IRIS-T SLM have similar capabilities, the deployment of which covers a much longer period of time than the Pantsir-SDM-E.

A feature of the newest installation is remote control, with one operator handling the control. It can be located, in particular, in a bunker, at a distance of up to 500 m, control is carried out via fiber optics.

Pantsir-SMD-E is equipped with a fire control system that includes a surveillance radar, a multifunctional radar system, and an electro-optical system. The complex is capable of detecting and engaging aerial targets at medium and short ranges, as well as assessing the effectiveness of firing in automatic mode.

The Pantsir-SMD-E was first presented at the Army forum in August 2024. Unlike earlier versions of the Pantsir, the new complex is exclusively missile-based; guns are not included in its arsenal.
