Russian main battle tanks T-72B3M and T-90M "Proryv-3" are equipped with active protection systems (APS) T-09-A6-1 "Arena-M". Military expert Evgeny Damantsev outlined the advantages of the system.
The analyst explained that "Arena-M" provides vehicles and their crews with many times greater protection against enemy hand-held anti-tank weapons, including AT4, CS, HP grenade launchers, as well as the NLAW short-range anti-tank missile system (ATGM).
The complex effectively counteracts a wide range of guided missiles, including BGM-71E/F of the TOW-2A/B complexes and APKWS-II rockets of the L-3 Harris Vampire multi-purpose tactical missile system.
An important technical detail remains the ability of the Arena-M KAZ to detect and intercept PG-7VS shaped-charge anti-tank grenades dropped by Baba Yaga hexacopters, or to detect them against the background of false targets with a similar effective reflecting surface dropped by enemy drones.
The analyst warned that in order to maintain the proper viewing sectors of the Arena-M, repair battalions will need to sacrifice the effective area of anti-drone "visors" placed on the T-90M and T-72B3M.
The Arena-M includes a radar station (RLS) with high noise immunity, an on-board computer and special ammunition installed in the mines around the perimeter of the tank turret.
The radar detects an enemy projectile, anti-tank missile or grenade aimed at the tank, calculates their trajectory and fires a protective ammunition that destroys the target in flight with a beam of damaging elements.
