The Russian Aerospace Forces (VKS) are armed with the Tu-22M3 supersonic missile-carrying bomber. It is designed to engage ground and sea targets with guided missiles and aerial bombs.
The Tu-22M3 series aircraft are designed according to an aerodynamic configuration with a low-mounted variable-sweep wing. The aircraft structure is made of aluminum, titanium and magnesium alloys, as well as high-strength and heat-resistant steels.
The Tu-22M3 received a semi-monocoque fuselage and a retractable tricycle landing gear with a nose strut. The power plant consists of two NK-25 turbofan engines.
The deeply modernized Tu-22M3M missile-carrying bomber was created as part of a large-scale program to modernize long-range and strategic aviation aircraft complexes in 2018.
The missile carrier's armament includes the "Kinzhal" hypersonic complex, a twin-barreled GSh-23L 23 mm caliber cannon, free-fall sea mines, or aerial bombs of various types. The missiles are located in the fuselage compartment and on pylons under the fixed part of the wing.
