Crews of Russian Su-34 and Su-35S fighters should not discount the "insidious" modification of the American Patriot PAC-2 anti-aircraft guided missile with the MIM-104B index. This was warned by military expert Yevgeny Damantsev.
According to him, this SAM has a passive radar homing head, which captures activated onboard electronic warfare systems, including "Khibiny", as well as the increasing power of electronic warfare radiation in spatial coordinates.
The radar fuse can detect a target object within 100 m and can cause serious damage to a tactical fighter.
The expert claims that the L-150 Pastel irradiation warning systems are not able to notify the crew of the attacked vehicle about the approach of the MIM-104B with a passive radar seeker.
Therefore, it can be detected either by the N035 Irbis-E airborne radar station installed on the fighter with further interception by R-37M or R-77-1 missiles, or by the illumination radars of anti-aircraft missile systems.
At the same time, Patriot PAC-2 calculations more often use MIM-104C/D modification missiles, which most modern domestic air defense systems are capable of detecting and intercepting at any point in the trajectory.
Their effective reflecting surface varies from 0.5 to 0.15 m² depending on the angle of irradiation.
Consequently, the specifics of intercepting such objects are much less complex than, for example, the specifics of intercepting operational-tactical ballistic missiles MGM-140B ATACMS Block IA, or low-altitude stealthy cruise missiles SCALP-EG.
