Mobile internet in Russia has become faster after the launch of fifth-generation networks. According to TelecomDaily, in the month following the 5G launch on September 11, the median data upload speed from subscribers increased by 19.7% — from 8.6 to 10.3 Mbps. Data download speed increased by 13.7% — from 24.24 to 27.56 Mbps.

The agency analyzed over a million user measurements obtained through the Megabitus service and the Gosuslugi portal. The growth was recorded across the country as a whole, not just among users connected to 5G.
Currently, operators are using existing LTE frequencies and part of the existing infrastructure to deploy new networks. According to NTI expert Ilya Ilyinsky, this allows for faster internet without mass equipment replacement, but the potential of this approach is limited.
Higher speeds should be provided by networks in the 4.63–4.99 GHz range. According to TelecomDaily CEO Denis Kuskov, speeds in 5G networks themselves already reach 240–260 Mbps. However, to expand coverage on new frequencies, operators will need to install additional base stations.
Experts expect that by the end of 2026, the median mobile internet speed could increase by another 10%. But the pace of communication improvement will depend on coverage expansion and infrastructure development.
