Drones have started to be used for monitoring the operation of runway (RWY) equipment at Vaskovo Airport in Arkhangelsk. This was announced by Igor Muraev, Deputy Chairman of the Arkhangelsk Region Government.

Drone operators fly around the RWY airfield lighting infrastructure facilities to monitor equipment parameters, Muraev explained.
The use of UAVs significantly speeds up such work. Large federal airports have already shown interest in this experience.

The main regional carrier — JSC "2nd Arkhangelsk United Aviation Detachment" has formed a specialized unit that develops and produces drones. The company's specialists also operate their own drones, performing aviation work.
Drones are used in the region's forestry. The Ministry of Forestry and Timber Industry of the Arkhangelsk Region purchased 45 drones of various types to monitor the fire situation. UAVs will help department employees identify illegal activities, including logging and waste disposal outside landfills.
In addition, the region is actively implementing educational programs related to UAS. According to Muraev, in 2025, 120 college students were trained in the specialty "UAS Operation". In 2026, Northern (Arctic) Federal University (SAFU) introduced a new master's program in "Software Engineering of Unmanned Systems in the Arctic", the government representative concluded.
