RZD conducted acceptance tests of a robot that independently releases and checks brakes on freight wagons. The tests took place at the Chelyabinsk-Glavny sorting station as part of the “Digital Railway Station” project. During the tests, the robot performed these operations on almost 5,000 wagons.

Brake release is one of the operations performed on wagons at sorting stations before further work with the train. Robotization is needed to remove people from dangerous areas and speed up train processing.
The complex was developed by JSC NIIAS in cooperation with Russian robotics manufacturers. It is installed on a mobile tracked platform and moves independently between railway tracks. For navigation, the robot uses lidars and technical vision cameras, and a manipulator performs the necessary actions with the brakes.

Currently, such complexes are being deployed in the parks of the Chelyabinsk-Glavny station. In the future, RZD plans to use this technology at 25 more key sorting stations.
NIIAS began creating an experimental prototype of the complex for releasing freight wagon brakes back in 2020. From September 2020 to January 2021, the institute conducted its winter tests in various weather conditions. in 2024, NIIAS began R&D work on the development of a robotic complex for detecting cracks in cast parts and releasing freight wagon brakes.
