Specialists and students of RTU MIREA presented a modular 3D printer with automatic print head change during operation. The device is equipped with two heads and a movable carriage with magnetic attachment, which allows it to independently change the installed component depending on the task.

The main difference of the design is that the printer can work with different materials and tools, independently changing the required print head. The device configuration can be changed for a specific task, so RTU MIREA expects to use this approach in small productions, research centers and educational laboratories instead of several specialized printers.

The printer's working area is 300×300×250 mm, and the maximum declared printing speed is 700 mm/s. The device works with five types of plastic - PLA, PETG, ABS, TPU and HIPS. Depending on the selected material, printed parts may differ in stiffness, impact resistance and elasticity.

In the future, the developers plan to add automatic print quality control. The system will monitor the process in real time and detect defects. If a problem arises, it will be able to stop printing or correct it to reduce plastic consumption and the number of defective parts.
