The use of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies by remote fraudsters should entail a stricter punishment than that provided for by current legislation. This opinion was expressed by Evgeny Masharov, a member of the Public Chamber of the Russian Federation Commission on Public Control and Work with Citizens' Appeals.

In order to increase the effectiveness of countering organized criminal communities engaged in remote fraud, I propose to introduce a qualifying feature in the form of using artificial intelligence services as an aggravating circumstance for such categories of crimes.
According to Masharov, criminals have very often changed their schemes for deceiving citizens. This is indicated by the number of appeals from victims. The scripts used by fraudsters are constantly updated. This is due to the implementation of AI technologies by criminals, he added.
New technologies allow fraudsters to deceive Russians even in a protected digital environment. Despite the measures taken by the state to improve the digital literacy of the population, crime statistics in this area remain high, Masharov concluded.
Remote fraud is qualified under Article 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. Depending on the severity of the crime, punishment in the form of a fine or imprisonment for up to 10 years is provided.
