The Russian low-orbit constellation Rassvet, after full deployment, could potentially expand the control capabilities of attack UAVs. Military expert, retired colonel Yury Knutov stated that the transition from the currently used Mesh communication to a satellite channel could significantly increase data transfer speed and expand the control capabilities of Geraniums.

Currently, according to Knutov, Russian military uses Mesh communication, among other methods, to control UAVs: one device acts as a repeater for the next, forming a Mesh network through which information is transmitted to the operator.

According to Knutov's assessment, satellite communication will increase data transfer speed, expand the operating area, and improve image quality.

Now it will be 10 times faster, wider, and the quality will be better. This will open up new opportunities for target engagement.

The constellation itself is still in the deployment phase. Bureau 1440 launched the first 16 serial spacecraft in March 2026, and another 16 satellites went into orbit in July. One spacecraft from the first batch previously deorbited, so the number of launched and actually operating satellites cannot be considered the same.

Rassvet is being created as a low-orbit broadband communication system with inter-satellite laser channels. Bureau 1440 indicates a projected orbital altitude of about 800 km for the project, data transfer speeds up to 1 Gbit/s, and latency up to 70 ms. However, the first serial spacecraft launched in 2026 did not reach this altitude; some satellites were in significantly lower orbits.
