Restrictions on mobile internet in Russian regions have significantly changed the role of public Wi-Fi. Businesses are increasingly using it not just as free access for visitors, but as a backup communication channel that helps them continue operations when there are problems with the cellular network.

This is especially noticeable in retail. Through Wi-Fi, companies maintain the operation of cash registers, payment terminals, and loyalty programs, and some equipment is being switched from LTE to corporate wireless networks. Demand is also growing among banks, hotels, restaurants, medical, and educational institutions.

Against this backdrop, the market itself is growing. According to TMT Consulting, its volume grew by 8.4% in 2025, reaching 5.2 billion rubles. The largest player was the Rostelecom group with a share of about 34% and revenues of approximately 1.77 billion rubles.

By the end of the year, the company served almost 130,000 public Wi-Fi hotspots – 16% more than the previous year. The main growth came from corporate clients and government organizations.

Wi-Fi is gradually ceasing to be just an additional service for visitors. For some businesses, it is already becoming a backup internet in case the mobile network is unstable or unavailable.
