Specialists from the Academy of the State Fire Service of EMERCOM have developed a protective case for lithium-ion batteries. Its task is to prevent open flames from spreading if the battery overheats, short-circuits, or catches fire.

The case is made of dense domestic silver-white fabric and can withstand temperatures up to 1,400 degrees. During tests, the battery inside continues to burn, but the open flame does not escape. Without protection, such a battery can erupt in a powerful fountain of flame.
Prototype cases and cloths have been developed that minimize the spread of open flames.
The academy has been studying lithium-ion battery fires for about five years. The main scenarios include puncture, overheating, overcharging, and short circuits. Specialists see a particular danger in night charging, when no one is monitoring the battery's condition.
Other protection methods are being developed in parallel. For example, a system has been proposed for cars that creates a water curtain around the vehicle and simultaneously supplies water under the chassis.
