The MC-21-310 is sometimes called a continuation of the Soviet Yak-242 project, but there is no direct design continuity between the aircraft. Aviation expert Roman Gusarov, in an interview with "Pervy Tekhnichesky", explained why the comparison of the two machines turned out to be a persistent myth.
He recalled that the Yak-242 did not go beyond the preliminary design stage. A full-fledged aircraft with a completed design, ready-made systems, and production documentation was never created.
It was only a preliminary design. That is, they said, let's make such an aircraft. They drew it on a piece of paper.
The commonality between the projects is essentially limited to one market parameter – both were conceived as narrow-body passenger aircraft.
Therefore, Gusarov believes, even if more detailed documentation for the Yak-242 existed, it would be practically impossible to transfer it directly to the MC-21.
And even if it did exist, modern technologies have advanced so far that there is really nothing to take from there.
The design, materials, power plant, avionics, and the design technology itself have changed radically over decades, Gusarov summarized.
