Specialists from the Reshetnev Siberian State University of Science and Technology (Reshetnev University) and the Kirensky Institute of Physics (IF SB RAS) have developed a special composite material based on cryogels. It can be used in regenerative medicine as a scaffold for growing soft tissues and delivering drugs to them. This was announced by the press service of the Krasnoyarsk university.

The material is a polymer mesh with a macroporous structure. The development opens up new possibilities in regenerative medicine, emphasized Reshetnev University.

In addition, they have the ability to release drugs (a process in which the active substance separates from the dosage form and becomes available to the body), which can be used to treat infected wounds and for postoperative rehabilitation, the university added.

Alexandra Pozdnyakova, a junior researcher at Reshetnev University, stated that the composite material includes microparticles of biodegradable polymer.

We have obtained a promising basis for "smart" bandages and implants that can serve as a matrix for the growth of the body's own cells and deliver medicine to the wound in a prolonged manner.

During experiments, it was confirmed that polymer microparticles changed the physical properties of the composite. They act as a reinforcing filler, due to which the elasticity of the material increased by 110%.

Scientists also tested the composite as a system for delivering antiseptic to the wound. The experiments were successful — the drug was released for 2 weeks, which is very important for long-term tissue healing.
