Scientists have recorded a sharp surge in solar activity. Since the beginning of the day, three M-class flares have occurred on the Sun. The risks of impact on Earth are currently estimated as among the highest in recent months, reported the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy of IKI RAS.

The large center No. 4513, which is now almost in the center of the visible solar disk, has unexpectedly become active. It is from this region that direct ejections towards Earth are possible. The group of sunspots has been observed for about a week, but until recently it showed almost no activity and was considered to have almost exhausted its energy. The beginning series of flares showed that this assumption was incorrect.

Three M-class flares were registered within a few hours – the fourth category on a five-point scale. Their power ranged from M1.7 to M1.9. For comparison, only four such events occurred throughout August until today, meaning their number almost doubled in a few hours.

Currently, there are no direct forecasts for plasma ejection towards Earth and subsequent geomagnetic storms – the situation continues to be studied. At the same time, experts note that the current position of the active center increases risks for our planet. Maximum X-class flares have not yet been recorded, so there is no talk of historical records. The current activity is noticeable on the scale of the last two to three months, but not a year or several years.

The key date in this situation will be August 25, 2026. Based on the further behavior of the Sun, specialists will be able to understand whether the current surge will be a short episode or if the activity will continue to intensify.
