The Moscow Metro is preparing for the transition to driverless control. Special RFID tags have been installed at all 29 stations of the Big Circle Line (BCL), which help the system determine the exact position of the train during testing. Maxim Liksutov, Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Transport and Industry, spoke about the progress of testing the driverless train.

Train testing began in January 2026. Each RFID tag contains information about the train's stopping point. When the train approaches a station, a special antenna on the lead car reads this data.

After that, the automatic driving system refines the train's position, ensures smooth braking with an accuracy of up to 30 centimeters, and then independently opens and closes the doors after stopping at the platform.

Currently, tests are being conducted without passengers. However, according to legal requirements and for safety, a driver is present in the cabin. The Moscow Department of Transport stated that throughout the entire testing period, the driver never had to intervene in train control.

By the end of 2026, the train is expected to start operating regularly on schedule along with other trains, but without passengers for now. In 2027, the first passenger trips are planned, and by 2030, the first fully driverless line of the Moscow Metro on the BCL is expected to open.
