The Soviet T-80BVM tank has changed its familiar appearance. An enlarged lattice structure appeared above the turret, and a third row of dynamic protection blocks appeared on the hull, reported the "Tekhnosfera Rossiya" publication.
The main change to the tanks is related to protection against top attacks and FPV drones. Enlarged anti-drone screens cover a larger area of the turret, and its aft part is additionally protected.
The side screens received a third row of dynamic protection blocks, and the outdated "Kontakt-1" on new vehicles is being replaced by the "Relikt" complex.
The main goal of all changes was to counter FPV drones and loitering munitions, which hit the combat vehicle in its most vulnerable spots – the roof, sides, and rear.
Tanker with 20 years of experience, Major Andrey Bestemyanov, explained that the T-80BVM did not become obsolete, despite the era of attack drones. He is convinced that combat vehicles are still capable of engaging targets with direct fire.
However, not everyone considers tanks, including the modernized T-80BVM, an important element for the army. War correspondent Dmitry Steshin noted that combat vehicles have become "targets" for attack UAVs even when operating from a covered firing position.
