The Russian PD-8 engine was created in a short time, but this does not mean that its development involved choosing between speed and safety. Aviation expert Oleg Panteleev stated this to "Pervy Tekhnichesky".

The question of potential risks to the PD-8's service life arose due to the pace of engine creation and the need to quickly complete the import substitution program. This concerned the hot section and automatic control systems, for which long-term testing is especially important.

However, according to Panteleev, posing the question of "accelerated development at the expense of safety" is incorrect.

I do not believe that there was any compromise between development speed and safety during the development of the PD-8. All tests that must be successfully completed before the engine is approved for commercial operation have been successfully completed.

In May, ODK reported the completion of the PD-8 certification program after more than 6500 hours of testing. This included checks as part of the aircraft and on test benches, as well as tests according to the most stringent Russian certification basis.

Rosaviatsiya issued the type certificate for the PD-8 on June 5, 2026, opening up the possibility of its serial production.

Andrey Patrakov, head of flight safety service, called the hot section of the PD-8 the area of greatest risk.
