The air intake of the promising Russian Su-75 Checkmate fighter may be unsuitable. This was stated in an article about the latest aircraft by Nikolai Chikunov, a designer at the A.I. Mikoyan Design Bureau, which was obtained by "Pervy Tekhnichesky".
According to the engineer, the chosen scheme has virtually no analogues in world aviation and could affect not only engine operation but also aircraft behavior.
After a detailed review of the patent for the F-35 inlet device, a number of questions inevitably arise regarding the solutions underlying the Checkmate air intake.
Chikunov added that the location of the air intake is capable of creating additional aerodynamic moments that will have to be constantly compensated by control surfaces and the thrust vectoring system.
For example, in the promising MiG-LMFS project, this problem was solved differently – by using two side air intakes that do not create such effects, the designer concluded.
It is noteworthy that the issue of the air intake was already raised at the World Defense Show 2024 in Saudi Arabia – visitors noted changes in the air intake design on the updated Su-75 model – engineers straightened its bottom and removed the internal partition.
The project also underwent changes based on requests from potential customers, and the aircraft's modular architecture allowed this to be done in a short time.
