Nuclear power plants built with Russian technologies can operate stably in extreme conditions. This was stated by Rosatom CEO Alexey Likhachev, commenting on news about anomalous heat in various countries around the world.
Russian stations are designed and operated taking into account that climatic conditions can be very different, including extreme ones.
Likhachev reminded that Rosatom builds NPPs in different regions. For example, the Kola and Bilibino stations are located in an Arctic climate, El Dabaa (Egypt) in a desert climate, and Kudankulam (India) in a tropical climate.
The stability of energy facilities is ensured by safe engineering solutions. In addition, the automation of all systems plays an important role.
Even in anomalous heat conditions, the stations continue to operate reliably and safely at 100% nominal power.
The southernmost Russian NPP is considered to be the Rostov NPP (four power units were commissioned from 2001 to 2018). In summer, the air temperature in the region rises above 40 ℃. In 2021, nuclear engineers built a complex of fan cooling towers that work together with the main cooling towers during peak heat and dissipate excess heat.
