Russia needs to develop its own production of synthetic diamonds, especially using CVD (chemical vapor deposition) technology, which allows growing single crystals, said Alexey Vasiliev, author of the Telegram channel "Russkiy Inzhener". He emphasized that without its own laboratory production, the development of diamond cutting would be a waste of money, as synthetic diamonds are displacing natural ones.
As Vasiliev notes, CVD technology is particularly relevant for future microelectronics. Synthetic diamond is a unique semiconductor material that surpasses silicon and other wide-bandgap semiconductors in several parameters. It has exceptional radiation resistance, high thermal conductivity (five times higher than copper), and the ability to operate at extreme temperatures.
These properties make synthetic diamond indispensable for defense technology and space. Diamond components are in demand in radiation-hardened electronics for satellites and air defense systems, in power and microwave electronics for radar stations and electronic warfare systems. Diamond is used to create ionizing radiation detectors for nuclear energy and space research, as well as powerful semiconductor devices for high-temperature electronics.
Last year, the government allocated almost 1 billion rubles to MEPhI for the creation of the World-Class Scientific Center "Electronic and Quantum Technologies Based on Synthetic Diamond". The Institute of Applied Physics of the Russian Academy of Sciences is developing diamond Schottky diodes for powerful converters and radiation detectors, and NPP "Istok" is implementing CVD-diamond heat sinks in microwave diodes. However, existing capacities may not be sufficient – the country needs to increase its own production of electronic-grade synthetic single crystals.
