The construction of the Moscow Metro accelerated in 2026 to a record pace for the last five years, said Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin. According to the mayor, work is underway on the construction of the Troitskaya and Rublyovo-Arkhangelskaya lines and the Dostoevskaya station of the Koltsevaya line. Tunneling is being carried out for the Biryulyovskaya line.
In the first seven months of 2026, 14.7 km of tunnels were laid in Moscow. Simultaneously, 25 stations were under construction – 10 huge tunnel boring machines were working at the same time for this purpose.
At the same time, the construction of tunnels for the extension of the Arbatsko-Pokrovskaya line with the construction of the Golyanovo station has been completed in the capital. A decision has already been made to extend it further beyond the Moscow Ring Road – to the Vostochny district.
Plans until 2030 include building 69.1 km of lines, 29 stations, and three new electric depots in Moscow.
Since 2011, the Moscow Metro network has almost doubled. More than 270 km of lines have been laid, 127 stations, 14 electric depots of the metro and MCC have been built and reconstructed.
Currently, the Moscow subway is one of the largest in the world and the largest in Europe. As of early 2026, the system has approximately 273 operating stations on 16 lines, with a total track length exceeding 481 km. The Moscow Central Circle (31 stations) and four MCD diameters are also in operation.
The first metro line was opened on May 15, 1935 – at that time it had only 13 stations and 11.2 km of track.
