Engineers from Kuzbass State Technical University named after T. F. Gorbachev have developed an innovative method for diagnosing gasoline and diesel engines. This method allows assessing the condition of the cylinder-piston group and valve train without starting the engine.
The main feature of the technology is that instead of a starter, the crankshaft is slowly rotated using an electric winch and a frequency converter. This eliminates the influence of the battery, starter, and uneven cranking, which reduce the accuracy of traditional compression checks.
During tests, an electronic sensor records changes in pressure in each cylinder, and a digital oscilloscope synchronizes this data with the crankshaft position. Then, a program analyzes the maximum pressure, its rate of increase, and other parameters to determine the engine's condition.
According to the developers, the new method more accurately identifies wear of the cylinder-piston group, malfunctions of the valve train, and hidden defects that remain unnoticed during conventional compression diagnostics. The technology is suitable for both gasoline and diesel engines.
