For the first time in modern history, the Caspian Flotilla has received its own air wing. The new mixed air formation includes aircraft and multi-purpose helicopters – they will be able to cover ships and intercept drones. This is part of the program to strengthen the Navy in the region. Previously, the Caspian Flotilla did not have its own aviation – during exercises, ships worked with aircraft and helicopters of the Southern Military District.
Security of southern maritime borders
Now the flotilla is tasked with ensuring the security of the southern maritime borders and Russia's economic activity throughout the Caspian region, Sergey Ordzhonikidze, former Deputy Secretary-General of the UN, told Izvestia.
Part of the international transport corridor "North – South" passes through the Caspian Sea. It plays an important role in the transportation of goods between Russia, Iran and other states, the expert recalled. In addition, hydrocarbons are extracted in the region, and the fishing industry is developing.
The new aircraft and helicopters, including Mi-8 and Ka-27, are expected to expand capabilities for reconnaissance, ship cover, protection of the "North – South" corridor, and combating modern air threats, including long-range drones.
Relocation to Kaspiysk and strike power
The strengthening of the flotilla began more than ten years ago. The main forces were relocated from Astrakhan to Kaspiysk, where the necessary infrastructure was built. A new training complex for special forces has been put into operation. Coastal units have been strengthened – including with missile systems.
The main strike force of the KFL is small missile ships (MRK). They are capable of controlling a huge territory – from Eastern Europe to the Persian Gulf.
In recent years, the flotilla has been replenished with MRKs of project 22800 "Karakurt" – "Amur" and "Typhoon". Their main weapon is a universal ship complex with "Kalibr" and "Onyx" cruise missiles, which hit targets thousands of kilometers away. Air defense is provided by "Pantsir-M" anti-aircraft missile and artillery systems.
