By 2030, Gazprom will produce 47% of its gas from hard-to-recover reserves (HTR – hydrocarbon deposits whose extraction by traditional methods is inefficient or unprofitable due to complex geological conditions). This was stated by Vitaly Markelov, Deputy Head of the energy company, during his speech at the "Sakhalin Energy" forum in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk.

According to him, in 2025, Gazprom produced 405.4 billion m³ of gas, with 11.4% of this volume coming from HTR. As of early 2026, current recoverable gas reserves (for which exploration has already been carried out and a development project prepared) were estimated at 27 trillion m³.

Gazprom conducts its operations in almost all oil and gas regions of the country. Nearly 43% of explored natural gas reserves are located in the Yamal, Yakutsk, and Irkutsk gas production centers, in the Nadym-Pur-Tazovsky region (YNAO). Another approximately 30% comes from fields within the Kara, Barents, and Okhotsk Seas.

According to Rosgeolfond data as of June 2025, natural gas reserves in Russia were estimated at 67.092 trillion m³. The share of HTR in the production structure exceeds 30%, and it will grow in the future. The Russian Ministry of Energy believes that specialists will fully master HTR development technologies in 2027-2028.
