Driverless trucks could become part of future international logistics. Russia plans to develop such transportation and launch unmanned routes not only within the country but also between states. Russian President Vladimir Putin revealed the details.
The first line of unmanned road freight communication has already started operating. It was launched in May. It connected Moscow and Astana, the Russian leader said at the forum of interregional cooperation between Russia and Kazakhstan.
In the future, such transportation is planned to be carried out on other international routes as well.
Unmanned freight transport refers to trucks and other vehicles that can transport goods without constant driver involvement. Such vehicles use cameras, sensors, navigation systems, and software to autonomously follow a set route, monitor road conditions, and make decisions while driving.
In Russia, the development of unmanned freight transportation is part of creating special routes where such vehicles can safely operate alongside conventional transport. One of the first major projects was the launch of the Moscow — St. Petersburg unmanned freight line.
The M-11 "Neva" highway became the first major corridor for unmanned trucks. Regular test and commercial runs are already taking place on this highway with equipment from KAMAZ, "SberAvtoTech" (now Navio), and other developers. A distinctive feature of the project is the close integration of the vehicle with "smart" infrastructure. Subsequently, the Moscow — Astana route was implemented.
