The first power unit of the Smolensk NPP completed its major overhaul with modernization ahead of schedule and was connected to the power system. The work allowed restoring the resource of the reactor equipment, extending the operational characteristics of the core, and generating an additional 50 million kWh of electricity.

The repair campaign included one of the key stages of the reactor plant resource management program — restoring the characteristics of the graphite masonry. To perform complex operations, specialists used robotic systems and special technological equipment.

During the work, the resource of 195 cells of the reactor's technological channels was restored. Also, 26 channels of the control and protection system, responsible for monitoring and safety of the plant's operation, were replaced at the power unit.

The early completion of the repair allowed increasing the period of useful electricity generation. According to the management of the Smolensk NPP, only by reducing the terms of repair programs, the station additionally generated 113 million kWh of electricity in the first half of the year.

The first unit of the Smolensk NPP continues operation with updated equipment, which increases the reliability of the power unit's operation and creates conditions for further use of its resource.
