Crews of T-72B3M main battle tanks have found an unusual way to deceive reconnaissance drones – after completing a fire mission, they began to simulate a fire. The commander of the combat vehicle, Senior Sergeant Alexander Ivanov, spoke about the cunning tactic.
The servicemen used smoke grenades installed on the tank and set fire to tires from wheels that were nearby. The idea turned out to be simple – observers from the air mistook the smoke and fire for signs of the tank's destruction. However, the crew was then able to calmly continue their work.
At the same time, tankers are increasingly working from concealed firing positions, using terrain and cover.
We assess the angle and if the turret traverse allows firing without the risk of damaging the gun on obstacles, we also work as usual. If the angle is too large, we change position, rolling to a backup line.
Also, the T-72B3M has already received updated Arena-M active protection systems against drones, following their "older" comrades – the T-90M "Proryv". Crews are already undergoing training specifically with this system.
The tests of the T-72B3M with Arena-M were first reported in February 2026. At that time, Uralvagonzavod reported that the system had proven to be very reliable.
